LinkedIn outreach for UK professionals: a step-by-step guide

If you're a UK professional, such as an accountant, solicitor or consultant, your name is your business. Outreach on LinkedIn works best when it reads like a note from a person who has done their homework. Here is a plain way to do it.

Step 1: Decide who you want to meet, and why

Write one sentence: "I want to meet [role] at [kind of firm] because [reason that helps them]." If you cannot finish the sentence, the message will not land either.

Step 2: Tidy your own profile first

People click through before they accept. Use a clear photo, a headline that says who you help, and an About section in plain English.

Step 3: Write a connection note in your own words

Keep it short and specific. Two examples to adapt, not copy:

  • "Hi Priya, I saw your talk at the regional event on later-life planning. I work with families on similar questions in Leeds and would value connecting."
  • "Hi Tom, we both work with owner-managed businesses in Bristol. Happy to swap notes if useful."
  • No pitch, no links and no calendar invite in the first message.

Step 4: Follow up once, gently

If they accept, send one follow-up that offers something useful: an article, an introduction, or a question about their work. If there is no reply, leave it.

Step 5: Keep a never-contact list

Existing clients, people who have asked not to be contacted, and anyone your firm's policy excludes should never get an outreach message. Write the list down and check it every time.

Step 6: Know the UK rules that apply

  • LinkedIn messages involve personal data under UK GDPR: keep only what you need and honour objections.
  • Email is different. Under PECR, unsolicited marketing email to individuals (including sole traders and partnerships) generally needs consent; email to limited companies and LLPs is treated differently. Check the ICO's guidance before moving a LinkedIn conversation to email.
  • If your firm is regulated, check your own rules on promotions before you message people.

Step 7: Pace yourself

A few thoughtful requests each working day beat a hundred in an afternoon. It is kinder to the people you contact and closer to how LinkedIn expects a person to behave.

Where Mahleon fits

Mahleon is a Chrome add-on and web app that sends your connection requests and follow-ups, in your own words, at a steady pace. An optional Salesforce check and a never-contact list keep the wrong people out.
